Indigenous Engagement

As part of Forbes Bros. Group of Companies, at FB Valley our Indigenous relations strategy is central to everything we do. We are committed to fostering meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities through employment, procurement, and business development. As part of our broader corporate strategy, we recognize that economic reconciliation is a key pillar in building sustainable and long-term relationships with Indigenous communities.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that the land we work on is located on Turtle Island, a term that refers to the land we now call North America. This land has been inhabited by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years, and we recognize the ongoing presence and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. We express our gratitude for their stewardship and care of this land, and we honor the treaties, traditions, and cultures that have shaped this place for generations.

We also recognize the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization, including the displacement and marginalization of Indigenous communities. As we move forward in any construction project, we commit to working in a spirit of reconciliation, respect, and collaboration with Indigenous communities, acknowledging their rightful role in the decision-making processes and the protection of the land.

Community First

FB Valley is committed to the “Community First” model, as we believe it is our responsibility to offer local communities’ priority for various opportunities, such as: training, employment, construction related contracts and other economic benefits. We strive to provide the Indigenous communities we operate in a preferred opportunity to participate with our company.

Our goal is to ensure that as much work as possible is completed by those whose communities are most impacted by the construction activities we undertake. We  believe all communities deserve the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a robust economy. Forbes Bros. is proud of its commitment to working alongside Indigenous communities and consistently achieves high levels of participation in both our construction and maintenance operations. On some projects we have attained as much as 70% Indigenous employment throughout the various project construction phases.

Silver Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR)

As a Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) PAIR Silver accredited company, we have proven our business case through our Indigenous relations. We have business partnerships in place; Indigenous people are adding value at our workplace; and we are supporting sustainability through investment in communities and people.

“FBV crews helped restore 200,000 homes that lost power during the hurricane”

A crew of 43 powerline workers and 26 trucks from Abbotsford and the surrounding area drove 4,800 kilometres, non-stop, from Fraser Valley to the U.S. east coast to provide emergency restoration in the days following Hurricane Sandy. All the work had to be done by hand due to the mess of fallen trees and debris having rendered workers’ buckets trucks useless.
